PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

Noam Shomron gave a talk, “Big Data and Genomics: Halting the Spread of Breast Cancer,” as part of Nano World Cancer Day 2017, held at Tel Aviv University in February 2017. In his talk, he presented research his lab had conducted on breast cancer tumors, in which the lab succeeded in stopping tumor metastasis using a novel method. He opens the talk by introducing the field of genomics with the problem of data management. He tells us we have moved away from an era when genomic information was extremely expensive and inaccessible to individual patients or consumers. In 2001, the cost of sequencing a single person’s genome was equivalent to the price of four jumbo jet airplanes, whereas today the cost is about the same as that of a bicycle (see figure 3.2).
